It was extremely helpful to meet with a peer career advisor to review my cover letter and resume (in two separate meetings). During my resume meeting, it was helpful to get my resume professionally formatted to give employers an idea of my experiences in an organized manner and give them an idea of my timeline. Furthermore, this meeting helped me to understand the purpose of a resume and to be very intentional in what I chose to include. Because a resume has to be limited to one page, I got to reflect on what I want to include and what is most relevant to the job or program that I am applying to. The peer career advisor that helped me also gave me the advice to keep a document with all of my activities and leadership positions and activities, and that I have the option to shape it according to the position that I am applying to. This guidance gave me the opportunity to look at my past involvement and to see how it relates to what I want to do in the future.
During my other meeting with a career advisor, I went over my cover letter for the MeshEd internship. This meeting also made me more intentional and taught me the purpose of a cover letter. Having never written a cover letter before, I did not truly understand what a cover letter is and what I should be accomplishing in one. However, when I met with my peer career advisor, she put my resume and my cover letter side by side and helped me find a correlation between the two. She told me that they are both supplements of each other and they should work together in some sense. This made it much easier to write my cover letter and gave me the significance of writing one.
